In the seventies, the league was solvent and bridge was fun, the tournaments were large

and everyone was treated with respect and there were a lot of characters. It must have

been a slow day for the Bulletin staff when they printed the following hands. ACBL

There is always lots of action  at Barry Crane's table and usually he comes out on top.

But last night, Mike Edwards and Mimi Hagedorn had the better of it on both deals.

Barry was not willing to sell out to three spades, so he bid four hearts. Carol Sanders

liked her hand and cue bid spades. Barry bid five hearts and that was doubled.  After

ruffing the second spade, Barry led a heart to the king and when Mimi showed out,

He tried to recover by finessing the clubs, hoping to set up a trump coup. As a result,
