Spingold Chances SF- Part 6
(Page of 2)

The match after two segments was essentially even with Blass barely ahead by 4 imps after the first 30 boards.

As mentioned earlier, the pace of the match was particularly labored.

It became an issue on board 13 of the third segment.

Does North have a bid?

Does North have a bid after a 30 second hesitation by South? For assistance on this, it is my understanding that the rule book allows 20 seconds (times verified by video) so there was definitely an established hesitation prior to the bidding tray returning from the other side.

Here is the hand and the concluded auction.

The result amounted to 13 imps to Team Blass.

The third segment ended and the score for the third  was 28-28 making the cumulative score now 74-70 Blass.

The continuation by North was contested and the result protested.  It was not until the 28th board of the fourth segment for a final decision to be announced.

Would you have had a different approach going into the final segment had you known you were behind by 4 vs. being ahead by 9?  Ergo the dilemma of a delayed final ruling before the beginning of the final segment.

As mentioned in an earlier article, the match was already running overtime and although they did finish by the final bell the labored play allowed no time for vetting and polling of other players prior to the restart and therefore a possible inaccurate score.

I would be interested in what it would take to establish a panel of experts to be ready in the event of an appeal to avoid this type of isssue from arising in the future.  The Directors did what they could, but it certainly would be better to conclude protests by the beginning of play in the next segment IMO.
