Swiss. All players are solid. South led the Queen of Spades. After winning the Ace, East played four rounds of trump, South discarding the 2, 3 and 9 of spades in order (dummy throwing a spade and a diamond). Upon winning the fourth round of trump, North switched to a low club, giving declarer his tenth trick. Should North have been able to figure out to lead passively?

Also, what is the proper way for for North to play hearts to show South he has four to the ten (as opposed to three hearts to the ten)?

Carding is upside-down attitude and standard count, but suit preference when both are known.
