Revoked on opening lead
(Page of 2)

I'm sitting out Round 10 in Wroclaw and I can't bear to watch the play when I'm out so I thought I'd write up a hand from a few days ago in Round 5. We were playing Finland, a team in a position like us, just hanging on at the edge of the qualification zone.

I pick up 543 J632 A8643 J all Green, and Bill opens our chunky 1 (14+ with 's or 15+ balanced). Kauko on my right shuffles a touch and overcalls 1. I double to show 4-5 (and about 5+). Kauko pushes the tray through and it comes back shortly after with 2 from Seppo and a takeout X from Bill.

We all pass and it's my lead.

What's your poison?

Plan A against doubled partscores is to lead a trump, and that looks ok. Bill rates to be 4306 on the auction so I figure a lead sets up tricks, maybe a tapping position and clarifies the positions for Bill. And it's low risk when Bill has 6 of the little suckers. So I go off book and lead my J

I was pretty cheerful when I saw dummy. No ruff going, so the trump lead wasn't necessary (remember, I think declarer has 5 trumps and Bill is 4306). Kauko wins and plonks the Q on the table. Bill wins, cashes the Q (I pitch a low ) then has a think. He thinks Kauko has 5 trunps too so, imaging I have something like Kauko's actual ytrunmp suit, he tries to promote trumps tricks for me via overruffs. On the layout of course he could have switched his , let me ruff the 3rd round of 's to play a 3rd trump and ka-ching 2 off instead of the 1 off we actually got (vs 2 making undoubled in the other room when the defence broke 's too early)

Basically, I revoked on opening lead. In Ben's Big Book of Bridge, the only excuse for going off book is success (in the "Result Merchant and Proud" chapter).
