Pop History: Goren visits the Portland Club (Sports Illustrated, June 16, 1958)

Charles Goren writes about a visit to the rarified atmosphere of the Portland Club, the exclusive club whose card committee was a force in the promulgation of the Laws for Whist, Bridge, Auction Bridge, and Contract for many decades. Includes some photos of the club (which would have been seldom-seen, if ever, at that time), some historical colour, a glimpse of the exclusive membership (only 100 members), a few words about how bridge was played there at the time (no cue bids allowed!), and a rehashing of the Duke of Cumberland hand (no mention of its use in Moonraker, though).
