We're leading going into the last match of a congress (sectional for ACBLers) and draw the team running 3rd.

Our opponents play their 2 opening as 55 in 's and any other suit, less than an opening. That particular method often runs into trouble when it's both majors so I wasn't disappointed to see it on their card. And I wasn't surprised to see them open one in 2nd seat at favourable (for them) when I held A 7 AQJ1042 AQJ106.

I doubled, lefty bid an obviously bogus 3NT, passed back to me. I bid 4NT, which I figure shows a hand that expects to make 5m opposite almost nothing. Like Hxx in one minor could be enough (and is be enough this time). So lefty tries 5 no surprise, back to me again.

Well, what is the nature of partner's pass? Word of warning, I'm playing with my wife. In 22 years of marriage, the only things we've clearly established about taking the push at the 5 (or 6) level is that I think Jenny does way too much of it and that she thinks I make no sense every time I try to talk about it.

Hating everything and everyone except my darling wife, I X like a big wuss.

I slung A, which felt bad but didn't really make a difference - I have to lead a low to get a through to get the thing 2 off. Meanwhile, we're cold for 6 (and 6 actually).

In the other room, our teammates had forgotten to put this particular 2 club in the bag, and defended 5. 11 out. Great.

But they're not done with me yet...

Lefty flings out K pretty smoothly. Lefty is pretty imaginative so it's entirely possible he's speculated with KJx or something.

Anyway, righty plays the 10 (has the 9 and an odd number) and I duck for the fun of it. Lefty continues the J pretty easily and there I am. Are 's 6-3 or 4-5? If they're 6-3 then lefty has KJx because righty can't have any 's. If they're 4-5, then righty rates to have short 's but not necessarily a void.

So what's your poison? Heroically run the 4, or bland 10 (trying for the sucker cover) to the Q? Or a superheroic to the A trying to drop the stiff K?

I went for the to the Q of course. Partly because I've got a residual if righty is 2650 (with the Kx). 2 off and loving it. Not!

Minus at both tables and we got drilled in the match, although we held on for 2nd.

Why couldn't they have walked into a gin joint instead of a bridge joint? Or at least a bridge joint in Casablanca instead of Melbourne?
