Meaning of spades bids in a XYZ auction

In a 2/1 context and playing a simple XYZ version, after the auction started:

W
N
E
S
1
P
1
P
1
P
?

there are (at least) four ways of bidding spades. You can bid 1, jump to 2, first bid 2 and after the mandatory 2 bid 2, or you can bid 2 and bid spades at the lowest possible level.

How do you play each of these bids? Which ones should be natural and which should ask for a stopper (for example)? Should they have a totally different meaning? And to which level should they be forcing?

I'm especially interested in the general principles underlying the meaning of bids people make in this kind of situations.
