In the Well: Russ Jones

Entering "the Well" today is Russell Jones, current President of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). Jones was recently elected by the ACBL Board of Directors to serve for the 2019 calendar year.

Russ grew up in the Mississippi Delta and learned to play bridge, and other card games, at an early age on the farm when there was nothing else to do. Years later, his mother took him to his first duplicate game, and they won. That February, in 1987, he joined the ACBL. He still has his first masterpoint card showing 1.00 black.

In 1992, he received his doctorate with majors in accounting and information technology but continued to play bridge in his 'spare time.' He has been employed as a professor at Arkansas State University for most of the past 30 years (he lived two years in New Zealand on an exchange), with the last three years serving as Chair of Accounting and CIT. He currently lives in Jonesboro, Arkansas with his wife Jessica, daughter Riley (7 years old), and baby Madison (1 year old).

In the bridge arena, he started a small bridge club 20 years ago which still averages about 4-5 tables a session. He served his district as special games/NAP coordinator for 15 years and worked part-time for the ACBL for 20 years as a tournament director. For the past five years, he has served on the BOD, chairing the bridge committee for the past two years. He has also served as treasurer for the ACBL Charity Foundation.

His goals as ACBL President are to lower expenses (both board and NABC) and to curb the loss of members by providing incentives to clubs and teachers to bring in new members and retain them. He also wants to improve communications between the membership and bridge administration.

Russ will be available all day Tuesday to personally answer your questions about himself, his goals for the ACBL, and anything else of interest.
