How to handle the spade suit, again

This came on the Wbridge site. I have some doubt about the official solution.

The official solution is to lead the 3. North wins the K and returns the 10. South wins the Q and returns the 2. As the cards lie this works and you take the first five tricks. However, while you do not expect East to have four spades, it seems to me he could hold J97. I thought the correct spade to return from the North hand at trick two was the 6. What am I missing?

The really good results occurred when N/S blocked the spade suit, declarer discarded two diamonds from dummy on the third and fourth spade, and eventually lost tricks to the Q and Q for down two.
