I was sitting East and had this situation come up the other day. I had something just shy of a 2NT overcall with four (yes, four!) spades to the queen-ten. Obviously we could have gotten a better result. 2NT was Ogust, but this could have been any forcing 2NT bid.

It brought up a number of questions in my mind that I would like to ask the community:

1) How do you suggest defending against this particular bid? Have you discussed with partners? What, for example, should a double by West show?

2) Is this bid (2NT) a psych? Or it a ”tactical bid”? What’s the difference?

3) If this particular N/S pair never used a “3S-further preemptive” bid, but always used 2NT first for any type of raise, would that be alertable somehow? Is it a good strategy? Should 3S be used for something else in this case?
