Analysis by Lynn Berg

South has an unappetizing choice, but Pass looks better than 2 to me with the shabby spade suit. It's likely to pass around to West who will bid and rebid hearts--and be lucky to find the 3-2 break most common when the opponents have five of your suit. The big thing East has to remember is that the 3-2 break is most likely and not shirk drawing trumps. He also wants to set up the diamonds while the K is still an entry. You might ask, why doesn't South lead her singleton club? Because she has a natural trump trick and no reason to suppose her partner will be able to get in twice to give her ruffs.
