Balancing: 1NT Overcall with Range Stayman and Two-Suited Overcalls

My favorite system of bidding after the opponents bid one of a suit, followed by two passes. Note: we play Raptor in direct seat, so the strength of second seats' balanced hands are not limited by the failure to overcall 1NT. He might have say a 16 count not suitable for an overcall or a takeout double (for example, 4-4-3-2 shape with a doubleton in an unbid major). But the methods are usable if you play natural  1NT overcalls.

Our balancing seat 1NT is 11-16 and dosn't promise a stopper. We use two ranges 11-13 minimum and 14-16 maximum. 2 is Range Stayman and the other advances are as follows:

  • 2/2/2/3 (except enemy suit) = weak signoff
  • 2 of enemy suit = stopper ask, no interest in majors, invitational+ values
  • 2NT = natural invitation with no majors and a stopper
  • 3 if enemy suit = stopper ask, no interest in majors, game values.

 

1NT bidder's answers to Range Stayman after a minor suit opening:

  • 2 = 11-13 no major.
  • 2 = 11-13 four hearts, may have four spades.
  • 2 = 11-13 four spades, denies 4 hearts.
  • 2NT = 14-16 with a stopper.
  • 3 = 14-16 with no stopper.

After a minimum rebid, 2 bidder can bid bid 3 of the minor as a stopper ask. 

 

1NT bidder after a major suit opening shows four cards in the other major or a stopper in the enemy major:

  • 2 = 11-13 neither major.
  • 2 = 11-13 hearts, may have spades.
  • 2 = 11-13 spades.
  • 2NT = 14-16 with a stopper.
  • 3 = 14-16 without a stopper.

Our method of showing two suited (5-4 or better) hands is inspired by The Overcall Structure. When one of the suits is the enemy suit, ignore that suit and overcall in the other suit if appropriate. If the higher-raking suit is longer, or the same length unless very weak, overcall in the higher suit and rebid in the lower suit if expedient. If the lower-ranking suit is longer or much stronger, we use the cuebid and the two cheapest jump overcalls to show the suits. A 2NT bid is used for certain very strong two suited hands.

After (1)-P-(P):

  • 2 = diamonds and spades.
  • 2 = diamonds and hearts, limited.
  • 2 = hearts and spades, limited
  • 2NT = hearts and another suit strong and forcing.

After (1)-P-(P):

  • 2 = clubs and hearts.
  • 2 = hearts and spades, limited.
  • 2 = clubs and spades, limited.
  • 2NT = spades and and another suit strong and forcing

After (1)-P-(P):

  • 2 = diamonds and spades.
  • 2 = clubs and spades, limited.
  • 2NT = clubs and another suit, strong and forcing.
  • 3 = clubs and diamonds, limited.

 

After (1)-P-(P):

  • 2 = clubs and hearts.
  • 2NT = diamonds and another suit, strong and forcing.
  • 3 = clubs and diamonds, limited.
  • 3 = diamonds and hearts, limited.

Advances are mosty natural, a cue bid is initially treated as stopper ask, but may conceal a strong raise for either suit.
