2011 Bermuda Bowl: Final Matchups Set

  • Bermuda Bowl: THE NETHERLANDS starts with a 1 IMP lead vs. USA 2
  • Venice Cup: FRANCE starts with a 0.33 IMP lead vs. INDONESIA
  • Seniors: USA 2 starts with a 6.33 IMP lead vs. FRANCE

In the Venice Cup, INDONESIA shocked the world once again with a big 5th segment comeback to propel them to the finals. In the other match the powerful French team never looked back after their early lead, but the Dutch fought hard and kept it close.

In the Seniors USA 2 easily dismantled USA 1 , while the POLAND vs FRANCE match came down to the very last board. FRANCE picked up 6 IMPs by defeating a doubled partial to win by 0.3!

In the USA 1 vs. USA 2 Bermuda Bowl match, USA 1 had a big 4th segment picking up 39 IMPs including a 7 IMP slow penalty on USA 2 . Then USA 2 dropped the hammer in the 5th picking up 50, getting the best of multiple slam swings. USA 1 did not have a miracle comeback in them for the final segment.

The ITALY vs. HOLLAND match saw a high-scoring, but even 4th segment with Italy getting slightly the better of it 46 to 44. ITALY picked up 15 after several small swings during the first 10 boards of the 5th segment. Then the fireworks started...

Brink and Drijver judged well to avoid the poor slam, but then Versace doubled. Brink was eager to turn the cube. Lauria judged well to run to 5 holding the minus to 500. However, the other table reached a poor 6 that was doomed with the diamond suit not splitting. So all the action at the other table was only worth a couple of IMPs.

On the next hand another big swing to the Dutch, as the Italian pair had a bidding misunderstanding and landed in the suit the opponents opened at the 5 level instead of their 11 card fit.

On the next hand was another 7 IMP swing to the Dutch when both tables went plus on a part score deal. Then ITALY struck back, when Sementa and Duboin bid a good slam, that was missed at the other table.

This was 11 IMPs back to ITALY cutting the Dutch lead to 3 going into the final 16 boards!

In the 6th segment, there were a couple of small swings, for each side but it basically came down to 2 slam swings. THE NETHERLANDS bid and made them both while ITALY stopped in game. One of the slams was quite good, while the other was basically on a finesse.
